Nimr al-Nimr issue: Sudan cuts off relations with Iran

The execution of the religious leader Nimr Baqer Al-Nimr has worsened relations between Sudan and Iran. Less than an hour after Bahrain cut off its ties with Iran, President Omar Omar al-Bashir of Sudan also confirmed the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador from Khartoum.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday in a communique announced that the country has broken off diplomatic relations with Iran.

“The Sudanese government announces the break with immediate effect of its diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. This decision was taken “ following the rough attack of the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Tehran “a blatant abuse of the international laws”

Almasdarnews reports that what will happen to Iran’s navy that has a base on its Red Sea coast remains unknown. This is a follow up to the Iranian government sacking of Saudi embassy in Tehran following the execution of Shi’ite cleric, Nimr al-Nimr.

El Béchir has also decided to expel the ambassador of Iran in Sudan. This brutal rise of tension between Sudan and Iran is as a result of the execution of the religious leader Nimr Baqer Al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia which made Iran, a country with Shiite dominance, swore the Saudi kingdom would pay for the act.

The authorities of Sudan mainly Sunni got closer in March, 2015 to the countries of the Gulf. Sudan had joined the coalition led by Saudi Arabia to fight the Shiite rebels

Mauritania has also followed closely after Sudan, by condemning in turn, the violence observed against the Saudi diplomatic representations in Iran.The reaction of Mauritania was made through a communique which asserts that: “The respect for the sovereignty and the non-intervention in the internal affairs of countries is a fundamental principles of the international law and the current diplomatic practices”
